Charlie Sheen

Charlie Sheen

menshealth.com – Some of what we learned today about Charlie Sheen was not surprising.

It was surprising to learn that he had the HIV virus, and that he was first diagnosed four years ago.

What wasn’t so surprising is that, allegedly, he hasn’t always shared this information with his sexual partners.

If that sounds cynical, it’s because this is a guy who once claimed he cured his drug addictions with willpower—“I blinked and I cured my brain,” he said—and frequently described himself as a warlock with tiger’s blood.

Bree Olson, Sheen’s ex-girlfriend, was on Howard Stern’s SiriusXM radio show this morning, talking about the announcement, and her claims that Sheen never told her about his HIV diagnosis.

PVM Healthy Minute: Can Ebola Be Transmitted in Semen?

October 25th, 2014 Comments off

HealthMinutefrom nytimes.com – Q. Can Ebola be transmitted through semen? Could a man infect a woman through sex before he overtly falls ill? In particular, could Dr. Craig Spencer, who spent several days with his fiancée after his return from Africa and before his infection was detected on Oct. 23, have infected her through sexual contact?

A. “We’re not supposed to say ‘never’ in public health, but I’d say it’s extremely, extremely, extremely, extremely unlikely,” said Dr. Daniel G. Bausch of the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, who has studied levels of virus in Ebola victims and survivors.

Ebola virus has been found in the semen of male survivors for up to 101 days after the onset of symptoms, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. So health authorities — being cautious — usually recommend that men who recover use condoms or abstain from sex, including oral sex, for three months. However, there have been 20 outbreaks of Ebola since the disease was first discovered in 1976, and sex has never emerged as a major risk factor.

AHF Launches Misinformation Campaign on PrEP

HealthMinutefrom hivplusmag.com – Escalating the war of words over PrEP, The AIDS Healthcare Foundation has announced a major new print advertising campaign denigrating the once-a-day HIV prevention option.

The new campaign began appearing in print publications in California and Florida August 17 and claims PrEP is not nearly as effective as the federal government says it is because of low adherence rates. Without a doubt, adherence to daily medication is a problem — for those living with HIV and those who are HIV-negative — and there are a lot of reasons for that.

But what the campaign does not discuss, or disclose, is that when taken daily, Truvada is incredibly effective in preventing new infections.

PVM Healthy Minute: Concerns Over Spread of Highly Resistant Gonorrhoea Strain Found in Australia

HealthMinutefrom independent.co.uk – A “sex superbug” has put doctors in Australia and New Zealand on high alert amid mounting evidence that antibiotics used to treat the infection are no longer working.

The most highly resistant strain of gonorrhoea ever detected in Australia was recently found in a tourist from central Europe who contracted the STI in Sydney.

Australia’s Health Department said a new multidrug resistant type of gonococcal bacteria, dubbed A8806, was identified with similarities to an untreatable strain of gonorrhoea known as H041.

It was first discovered in Japan in 2009, when a 31-year-old sex worker who had no symptoms of the disease tested positive in a routine check-up in Kyoto and could not be treated with the commonly-used ceftriaxone.

There have also been reports of a resilient strain in Hawaii in May 2011, as well as in California and Norway.

The Australian Health Department has urged GPs to refer all cases of gonorrhoea, known as “the clap”, for culture testing and New Zealand health clinics are on a high state of alert.

The capacity of the gonorrhoea bacterium to develop antibiotic resistance is well known, the New Zealand Sexual Health Society said, and many of the antibiotics used in the past 70 years no longer provide effective treatment.

HIV Rates Rise Among Young Gay, Bisexual Men

June 20th, 2014 Comments off

HealthMinutefrom ChicagoTribune.com – More than three decades after the emergence of HIV and AIDS sparked a massive campaign to curb infection, public health officials in Chicago and across the country are worried by a recent uptick in diagnoses of HIV — the precursor to AIDS — among young gay and bisexual men.

While transmission of the virus via injectable drug use and heterosexual sex has declined dramatically since the peak of the epidemic in the mid-1980s, infection of men who have sex with men is a different story.

New HIV infections in that group plummeted from a peak of about 75,000 per year to less than 18,000 per year by the early 1990s, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But the drop was short-lived, and infections currently hover around 30,000 per year. Experts say it’s younger men, especially young black men, who are driving that trend.

As part of an effort to learn why, Chicago will play host to a major research project that will look at all potential drivers of transmission within a single study. The National Institutes of Health recently awarded Northwestern’s Feinberg School of Medicine an $8.7 million grant for the five-year study, which will include the Chicago Department of Public Health and community organizations like Center on Halsted as partners.

PVM Healthy Minute – Truvada: The New ‘Anti-HIV’ Pill That No One Is Taking Or Talking About

Truvadafrom popdust.com – Ever heard of a pill called Truvada? Probably not. And you’re not alone, most people haven’t and no one seems to be taking it—or talking about it. But someone should really throw this thing into the spotlight, given what it can purportedly do.

In short, Truvada is a pill that is said to be 99% effective in halting the transmission of the HIV virus.

And guess who is being targeted?

That’s right—porn stars. Gay porn stars to be exact.

A recent documentary put out by Fusion TV follows the lives of San Francisco-based gay porn stars, Max Cameron and his partner Andy Sebastian. Max is HIV-negative, and Andy is HIV-positive. But that doesn’t stop them from being intimate.

Besides maintaining an active sex life with one another, Max and Andy are involved in a profession that demands they also do so at work. Needless to say, that can get complicated.

Make New HIV Protection Pill Available on the NHS, Say Sexual Health Campaigners

gaypornfrom independent.co.uk – Sexual health campaigners have backed calls for a daily pill which protects against HIV to be made available on the NHS, after authorities in the USA issued new guidance which could see it prescribed to thousands of gay men.

Trials of pre-exposure prophylaxis (commonly known as PrEP) in the USA have shown them it be highly effective at reducing the risk of infection. Earlier this week the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, America’s federal health authority, endorsed the use of the daily pill for patients who are regularly having sex with HIV positive partners, for gay men who have sex without a condom and for heterosexuals who have sexual partners who are considered a high risk, such as drug injectors.

PVM Healthy Minute: Ladies, Don’t Put Pop Rocks in Your Vagina During Sex

HealthMinutefrom medicaldaily.com – Couples will go to great lengths to fulfill their partner’s sexual fantasies. While some men and women practice BDSM (bondage and discipline, dominance and submission) and S&M (sadism and masochism), which includes whips, chains, handcuffs, and leather, others with a sweet tooth, apparently, choose to add just a dash of sugar. That was the case for a California couple who experimented with Pop Rocks sex — putting the fizzing candy into the woman’s vagina. The fantasy ended in the emergency room.

The couple’s not-so-sweet sexual experience was capped off after they realized the candy was causing a “burning and itching,” not “tingling,” sensation in her genitals. “She said, ‘The rocks are supposed to have added to our sexual pleasure, and I made my husband use them,'” said David G. Meyers, an emergency room physician in Newport Beach, Calif., in an episode of Sex Sent Me To The E.R., on TLC. “So she said she bought these candy rocks which are supposed to explode and tingle and sensation to their sex.”

Michael Weinsteinfrom pharmpro.com – It’s the Truvada conundrum: A drug hailed as a lifesaver for many people infected by HIV is at the heart of a rancorous debate among gay men, AIDS activists and health professionals over its potential for protecting uninfected men who engage in gay sex without using condoms.

Many doctors and activists see immense promise for such preventive use of Truvada, and are campaigning hard to raise awareness of it as a crucial step toward reducing new HIV infections, which now total about 50,000 a year in the U.S. Recent efforts range from think-tank forums and informational websites to a festive event at a New York City bar featuring popular drag queens.

PVM Healthy Minute – Anal sex: Science’s last taboo

April 4th, 2014 Comments off

HealthMinutefrom salon.com – That anal sex remains taboo may explain why a study about anodyspareunia – that is, pain during anal penetration – received little attention when it was published in the Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy. The study should have turned heads: It was the first research on anodyspareunia among women; it was conducted by a well-respected scientist (Dr. Aleksander Stulhofer from the University of Zagreb); and it was centered on young women and sex. That’s often the kind of research that attracts media attention (Young women sext! They get pregnant! They give oral sex! You get the picture …). However, anal sex remains such a strong taboo that this otherwise important study barely turned a head.

PVM Healthy Minute: Is Gonorrhea About to Become Impossible to Treat?

March 18th, 2014 Comments off

Follow us on Twitter @PornValleyMedia and @AdultFYI1 Send email to: S5ks@aol.com

HealthMinutefrom theverge.com – Gonorrhea has taken many forms over the last few decades. The strain that people acquire today isn’t the same one that previous generations had to deal with. In fact, it might not be the same strain that infected people a little over 10 years ago. That’s because gonorrhea, a sexually transmitted disease (STD), has become resistant to most of the antibiotics that we have used to combat it over the last three decades.

That’s right: penicillin and various tetracyclines have all stopped working against the most prevalent strains. This means that today’s gonorrhea patient has very few treatment options left. And with symptoms like burning, swelling of the testicles, vaginal discharge and anal itching, it’s not exactly something that you want to leave untreated. Unfortunately, the US Center for Disease Control (CDC) thinks that emerging resistant strains will one day take the last remaining first-line treatment option away — a treatment that currently consists of a cephalosporin injection combined with an oral dose of either azithromycin or doxycycline. The government agency outlined how that scenario could unfold in a study released today.

HealthMinutefrom cbsnews.com – A new vaginal gel has the potential to protect women from HIV, even if it is applied several hours after sex, animal research suggests.

The antimicrobial gel protected five out of six monkeys from a hybrid simian/human AIDS virus when it was used three hours after exposure to the AIDS-causing virus, said lead author Walid Heneine, a researcher in HIV/AIDS prevention for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The same gel also protected two out of three monkeys when applied a half-hour before HIV exposure, according to the study, published March 12 in Science Translational Medicine.

PVM Healthy Minute: What Can You Tell Me About Anal Sex and Surgery?

HealthMinutefrom surgery.about.com – It may seem like a simple question, tell me about anal sex and surgery, but it really isn’t. First, I’m not sure if you are asking if anal sex can lead to surgery or if you are asking if you can have anal sex after having surgery, so we will cover both.

The first question, can anal penetration lead to injury and surgery? Yes. It isn’t common, but it is possible to have a serious complications from anal sex. In some cases, a foreign body can become lodged in the rectum and require surgery to be removed. This is typically associated with the use of sex toys or other objects for sexual pleasure, but can also be the result of sexual assault or even the ingestion of a foreign object that gets stuck on its way out of the GI tract.
