Larry Flynt

from hollywoodreporter.com – It’s disheartening to see that most members of the national press have demonstrated their spinelessness by refusing to defend Charlie Hebdo and not publishing the cartoons that led to the senseless tragedy in Paris. Freedom is not free! We pay a price for everything, and the price we pay to live in a free society is toleration. That means we have to tolerate the things we don’t like, not just the ones we do.

Freedom of speech is not freedom for the thought you love; it’s freedom for the thought you hate the most. When cartoonists like Gary Trudeau, and cartoons like Doonesbury, lampoon politicians, they often inflict emotional distress. That’s when defending freedom of speech is most important — when it is offensive. If you’re not going to offend anyone, you don’t need protection of the First Amendment. I wonder what the Founding Fathers would have to say to The New York Times and the major networks who have shied away from their ultimate responsibility to inform the public. I don’t understand why the press should be a party to selling out one of the most important freedoms enshrined in the U.S. Constitution.

At the behest of David Cameron, UK ISPs were ordered to block porn websites by default in order to protect children though account holders can choose to opt out if they wish.

GodsLittleAcre-frontCover-191x300from washingtonpost.com – Sixty-one years ago, months before Hugh Hefner founded Playboy magazine, Georgia created the nation’s first censorship board.

The vote was unanimous. The Georgia State Assembly approved House Bill 247 on Feb. 19, 1953, with no dissent, establishing the Georgia Literature Commission. Despite being born into controversy, it lived on for 20 years surviving legal and legislative challenges until the administration of then-Gov. Jimmy Carter defanged it, setting off its slow death.

There was confusion from the start over how to define the commission, according to a fantastic 2000 article detailing its rise and fall by Georgia State University Professor Greg Lisby. From the beginning, the commission’s chairman, a pastor at Atlanta’s Morningside Baptist Church who would lead the body for its entire run, insisted it was nothing but a study committee to provide support to local prosecutors enforcing the state’s obscenity laws.
